A Person I Want To Be

She played a musical instrument that I had never seen. but what I knew for sure, was ; everyone in that country is attracted to her charm.

Anyango is a Japanese lady. who is the world’s first female Nyatiti player, who was even chosen as one of the most famous people in the world. Nyatiti is the traditional musical instrument played in a small village in Kenya. ; However traditionally, this musical instrument is allowed to be played only by men. I am sure nobody at that point would expect they would welcome a female player in the future.

Anyango, aka Eriko Mukouyama was born in Tokyo, chasing her dream to be a musician in America. Her fate was changed on 9.11 in 2001 where the terrific accident happened, on which day she was about to be on the plane that was crushed. She once gave up on being a musician, then by chance she met a Kenyan musician which led her to go to Kenya to learn it more. The musical instrument she was in love with was “Nyatiti”. She asked the master to let her learn it by his side, but she got refused again and again because of her being a foreigner, and on top of that, being a girl was the biggest obstacle.  yet she did not give up. Her passion and efforts moved the master’s mind. After 9 months practice, she officially became a Nyatiti player.

Her master who passed away, said. “It is your mission to express the charm of Nyatiti to the world by yourself. I would love you to do that on behalf of me.” She travels to the world today, following her new dreams.

Her story resonated with me in many ways. ; Which, I would love to share the beauty of Kimono to the world. I would love to carry what I have to the future. My goal has been always to be a person who I describe on What International Really Means. Many people could say “I would love to fly high in the world. I would love to work globally.” However the people who can truly achieve that I think is, those who connect the world, those who respect the differences between countries, those who do something good/meaningful for the world. Anyango made me think I would love to be one of them one day. Maybe it won’t happen soon, but at least she helped me to find my another dream.
